AMA guides 6th edition effect on schedule awards

The OWCP adopted the 6th edition AMA Guides in May, 2009 as the authority to be utilized for determination of impairment on all federal workers’ compensation cases. No matter the date of accident, a worker’s impairment must be properly calculated with the supporting documentation necessary for submission to the claims examiner or the rating will not be considered.

The government clearly adopted the latest edition because the numbers come up significantly lower for almost all conditions. Consequently the impairment rating and the corresponding schedule award payment are lower as well.

It is critical, now more than ever, to secure knowledgable doctors and evaluators to complete the necessary paperwork to obtain the highest Schedule Award available under the more stringent 6th edition AMA Guides.
