When and How Will I Receive My SSDI Payment?

SSD5

Sustaining a disabling injury or being diagnosed with a disabling medical condition is devastating, and recipients of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits rely on their payments to ensure that their bills get paid and their individual and family needs are met. Given the importance of SSDI benefits for individuals who cannot work due to their disability, it is critical to have a clear understanding of when and how payments will be paid — especially if you were newly approved and are waiting for a payment. The time of the month at which a recipient receives their SSDI payment can impact their ability to pay certain bills or provide for other specific needs.

The good news is that the Social Security Administration (SSA) has a schedule of when benefits are paid, and payments are usually made through direct deposit. Our national disability benefits lawyers can explain in more detail.

Payment Dates Are Set on Wednesdays of Each Month

It might seem odd to you if you are just now beginning to receive SSDI benefits or were recently approved for benefits, but the SSA delivers these benefits on four different days during each month, and on four very specific days: the third day of the month (i.e., April 3rd), and on the second, third, and fourth Wednesday of every month.

Given how the calendar changes each year, you cannot rely on a specific date to receive your benefit payment each month (unless you are among the people grandfathered into the system who receives payments on the third of each month). Rather, you will need to know whether you are a payee set for the second Wednesday, third Wednesday, or fourth Wednesday of each month.

Your Birthday Usually Determines When You Are Paid SSDI Benefits

To be clear, the payment dates on the third of the month are for individuals who have been receiving benefits prior to May 1997 who have kept their payment dates. New SSDI recipients will receive their payments on one of the Wednesdays of the month (discussed above) based on their birthday.

How do the payment days work? The day of the month your birthday falls on will determine which Wednesday of the month you receive your SSDI payment. Here is what the SSA says:

  • For birthdays on the 1st through 10th of the month, you will receive your payment on the second Wednesday of the month;
  • For birthdays on the 11th through 20th of the month, you will receive your payment on the third Wednesday of the month; and
  • For birthdays on the 21st through 31st of the month, you will receive your payment on the fourth Wednesday of the month;

SSDI Benefits Are Paid through Direct Deposit or Onto a Debit Card

How will you be paid? As the SSA explains, you can receive disability benefits in one of two ways:

  • Via direct deposit into your bank account; or
  • Onto a “Direct Express” debit mastercard.
