What is the difference between Social Security disability and OPM disability retirement?

Return to FAQs

Transcript:

The difference is that OPN Disability Retirement is available only to federal employees unable to perform their job and able to prove disability under that system. Social Security disability is available to all employees who have paid into the system whether through a public sector or private sector job. The thing to remember and know is you are entitled, if approved, to receive both so you should definitely look into both if you’re a federal employee who cannot work.
